Behrad finally finished John's gift and it's only after he's holding the paper in his hands that he realizes he has no idea what to do with it. It really does remind him of Zed, in a bittersweet way, but thankfully the subject is much easier on the eyes than himself.
He tracks down an antique frame and props up the drawing on his desk while he decides where it should live permanently. His room is still messy, but he's learned to organize the chaos some for Zari's sake, all of his magic paraphernalia shoved off to one side of the room while the rest is more-or-less dedicated to her time spent here. She has her own drawer, naturally, which has spilled over onto the top of his dresser, perfume vials looking suspiciously like potion bottles he tries to keep separate.
When the knock comes that evening, he's almost annoyed at himself for how tame an evening he'd been having by himself. Reading a bit of Merlin, having a spot of tea... There aren't even obvious liquor bottles for him to pretend to be interested in though now that he thinks about it a cap of whiskey in just might hit the spot.
John throws a panicked glance towards the picture and wonders if he should hide it, but that would be immature, right? It isn't weird to commission a portrait from your girlfriend's brother in exchange for psychedelics... well, certainly not by his standards anyway. He's looking around the room for something to distract and lands on a deck of tarot cards. Well, this could end super badly but that's his forte.
"For fuck's sake, it's unlocked!" he shouts before she can barge in anyway, and he's out of his shoes and on top of the bedspread shuffling the deck like she'd interrupted some spell he was about to set off. Maybe she is now that he's ridiculously anxious about an illustration. He tries to keep himself from looking at it and thankfully she makes that part easy with the way she glides into the room, his throat immediately drying up at the sight of her. "I was just in the middle of something, luv, do you mind...?" He gestures smoothly for her to sit on the opposite side of the bed so he has space to lay cards.
Zari is in a good mood. Ava allowed her to play dress up for a date. It's not like she's never done something like this before. John has probably seen the back catalog of 'friends' getting their hair and makeup done by Zari with product placements as needed before launches. This is special. Ava is her real friend. She wants her to be perfect for her special night. Zari thinks she got the job done right. She's pretty excited to show off the hundred and ten photos she took of Ava, but has enough mind to knock because who knows what he gets up to without her around???
She's understandably confused by the reaction. Zari is on the high of firsts. She barges in as cheerful as ever, dressed casually (for her) with a pair of denim jeans and silky black top. Her hair is curled and pulled back in a headband to keep it out of her face, but as lovely as ever. "Someone is testy today." She takes the seat as directed, dropping her phone on the pillow and kicking off her heels so she can get comfy. Clearly it's not time to force him to stare at a screen while she obsesses over how pretty Ava is.
"What are we doing?" Because it's we now. Zari is curious what exactly he's gotten himself up to while she was having bestie time.
John's sleeves are rolled up, his tie looser than ever, but there are minimal dark circles under his eyes these days. Everything about him looks more healthy and alive.
"Not testy," he argues in a completely testy way even while flashing her a smile. He wishes he had started by telling her how gorgeous she looks today, but he'll get to it. "Since we don't have an oracle lying around anymore, thought I'd get ahead of the situation."
He's honestly not sure if the reading will even work on a timeship, but that honestly only makes it a better distraction. Once he's done thoroughly shuffling, he holds the deck up for her.
"Cut this for me, sweetheart." About the only time he gets bossy with her it's about magic, but that comes from a place of safety even if he often sounds smarmy about it more out of habit than anything else. When she touches the cards, they're warm to almost hot from the energy John suffused into them, and whether Zari is trying to or not her energy will do the same. When the two forces meet she might feel a static charge like when you walk across carpet and touch an unsuspecting victim.
She tips her head to the side as she considers this. Sara was very helpful. Zari instantly approves of it with a bright smile. "I do love being one step ahead." She watches him shuffle the deck and tries to wonder how this could put John in a mood. He gives her a task and since it is magic-related Zari doesn't bother giving him a hard time.
"You're the magic man." She points out agreeably as she goes to take it. Her eyes widen once she comes into contact with it. Oh. Now that's thrilling and terrifying at once. She smiles like a little kid who has only just discovered ice cream and laughs. "Sometimes I forget you're actually magic." She points out honestly. Zari cuts the cards as asked now that the initial shock has worn off and hands them back to John.
He laughs too, loosening up a little despite himself and allowing their fingers to brush as he takes the deck back.
"This from the woman who calls me her magical boyfriend," he reminds Zari with a fond eye roll, taking a moment with the deck before dealing the first card. He makes eye contact with her as he narrates.
"The hanged man. Surrender, defeat, new perspectives... off to a good start, eh?" He pulls the second card and automatically groans. The Devil, though inverted, is not his favorite card. And yet he always seems to draw it.
"You are magical in ways that I have nothing to do with that so it's really not my fault." Zari notes with a wink. She gets serious as he reads it out. Sara put on a pretty good show for a hot minute there. Zari would love an encore... like the fun kind. Not the kind with the bad accents or try to serial kill her.
And she quickly loses it at the card reveal. Zari snorts at it and his reaction. She shouldn't laugh at his suffering and yet. :') "I don't have a clue what that means, but I think someone is trolling you."
When John and Zari go on their weird pseudo honeymoon (so it seems to him,) Nate is conflicted. He doesn't want to be, he doesn't even want to think about it; but it keeps springing into his mind unbidden anyway. Even he can admit they're well-matched. He finds himself watching them without noticing himself doing it - not until they're gone and he thinks he might actually miss their interactions. It's almost like mourning a death, this relationship he would almost regret remembering if not for the bittersweetness it left behind.
After a day or so, Nate thinks he might be grateful for the couple's vacation after all. It allows him some much-needed space (both mental and physical) to move on with his life. As the [thankfully mostly uneventful] week drags on, he starts to actually miss them for the people they are, his friends and ship-fam. And by the time they come back, Nate is as ecstatic to see John and Zari as with any of his friends who actually return to the ship. Not that he's still bitter or anything!! He forces them both into a group-Hello-hug from him before Behrad instantly whisks John away.
He makes a face to hopefully make Zari laugh, jumping to help her with her bags automatically. "What was that all about?" Nate raises his eyebrows to indicate it's not a real question, just a way to lighten the mood. It's no secret to anyone that Behrad and John have a weird vibe.
It actually wasn't a bad way to return. Zari sincerely hugs Nate back, high on the perfect trip, and loving the perfect bubble it left her in. Naturally it bursts a minute later. It does sting a little before big sister common sense kicks in. Behrad has gotten used to her undivided attention. The second she has to run off to maintain her business, he always has John to run to for that extra boost of love. She may not know the full story on that one, but it isn't hard to guess. Zari knows her baby brother better than he knows himself. He's latched hard onto John, loving the idea of an older brother, and didn't know how to deal without the pair doting on him in some form 24/7.
She sighs internally while making of show of being put upon by her baby brother with John's mouthed apology doing a lot to take out the sting of being dismissed. Zari fully drops the act at Nate's goofy face. She throws a grateful smile his way as he helps her with the bags. Some time away helps Zari to let go of the weirdness and remember what she likes about Nate. He can be the best friend you always needed when there's no burden of expectation from him.
"Behrad hates being left out." Zari explains as she starts towards her room. Most of this is all her so she doesn't feel too bad about taking John's things that way too. "Classic baby brother. I'm shocked he didn't invite you to surprise us for a day." She gets the feeling Ava or Sara bullied him out of that idea.
"Don't I know it," he agrees with a chuckle, since they've been gone the two of them had been spending an unhealthy amount of time together. It's probably good for them to split up for the night. "And don't think he didn't try- you're welcome."
As he approaches Zari's room, he realizes he doesn't really have much of a reason to stick around. So he does what he does best and goes into obnoxiously helpful mode.
"So uhm... is there anything else I can get for you? You must be tired, I always feel like I need a vacay after the first vacay to recover from vacaying so hard... you feel me?"
"Thank you." Zari offers up without any sarcasm or quips as she helps haul her million bags back to her room. She really needed the time for them. John didn't mysteriously stop being the most stalked man on the planet, but it was still a great week.
She can see a ploy to stay when it happens. Zari has done it enough times, after all. This is going well so she doesn't want to cut Nate off even if this is a solo job. "I feel you. Want to grab me some cucumber water while I sort? I can't rest until it's all organized." She really can't. Zari doesn't have it in her to live in mess. She's not John!!
He sighs like he totally gets that - because he does. Some things never change no matter what they destroy about the fabric of time.
"Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night because I put back a book wrong." It's a thing. "Coming right up! Don't go anywhere." Not that... she would. Whatever.
Nate hangs around awkwardly long enough to put the bags in a pile and glance around the room he's spent no real time in. After a moment though he's ditching out to grab that water from the galley. He heads back before long, somehow managing to dodge everyone on his way. He drinks from his bottle as he knocks on her door with an elbow and waits to be invited back in.
"This stuff is like, literally addicting. What the heck?"
Zari raises a brow at him, but lets it go otherwise. She can handle this kind of beautiful weirdo antics. She is working her way through the small collection of beauty products when he knocks. "Come in." Zari is already grabbing a handful of perfumes to line back up neatly with the ones that stayed. Some are from her line and others are new treasures she got on the trip. "I'm glad you think so because you should really start drinking more of it. Your skin could be 20% brighter if you hydrated more." She points that out like it's a normal observation people have. Zari has wanted to tell Nate that for ages. Now seems like the only time it won't come across poorly.
Ever since Colonel O'Neill accidentally found himself on the planet of the Asgard with all those little gray men (and women??) who look like Thor, Sam has been trying to backwards engineer the device he made to get there. It really was a shame that Ancient knowledge would have completely destroyed his brain if Thor's people hadn't removed it because it would sure come in handy right about now. They're probably still too "young" a race to fully ally with the Asgard, but these are the things nerds like her daydream about, especially when they have a mission like this - pulled straight off the glossy pages of National Enquirer. Literally.
General Hammond has to tell SG-1 with a straight face that they have footage of an alien abduction, a real one, and she has to really work not to smile in the briefing room, especially with all the boys making faces at her - well, Teal'c mostly just lifts his eyebrow but it's hard being the serious one at times like these. "Major?" he prompts her, knowing the rest of the team will just ask her if he doesn't anyway.
"The Colonel said the Asgard visits here all the time, sir. I don't like it either, but they're the most plausible culprits for who may have taken... what was her name again? Sara Lance." She reads off the paper with a frown as she formulates a plan. "I think our best option is to go to Cimmeria and try to interface with Thor there. He's never lied to us before. And I still haven't found a way to lock on the eighth chevron without that Ancient power source Colonel O'Neill built under the influence of the memory device, sir."
She says it with such shame as if anyone else would even be making progress in that department. It hurts to have to grovel to an advanced species for help with something so petty, but this Lance woman must be a matter of national security even beyond her clearance so best to get it over with. General Hammond asks some more rudimentary questions before greenlighting their mission and sending SG-1 to the locker rooms to suit up. Things go as they have hundreds of times before, already. Not that it ever gets less amazing, wormhole travel being her actual government-sanctioned Air Force career, but even this job has its mundanities.
Once on Cimmeria, they have a warm reunion with Gerwyn, thankfully not interrupted by the Gou'ald or anything else sinister this time. She's still a widow and they can't fix that, but she seems in good spirits considering her planet is a safe haven once more. In the middle of this rather unremarkable interaction, Sam suddenly finds herself caught in the tractor beam of an honest-to-God flying saucer. It doesn't exactly look like how she remembered Thor's ship to look and any attempts to move to grab her weapon, also caught in the matter stream, are completely futile. Jack is shouting something she can't hear, and then in the blink of an eye, she's on the deck of a ship that looks to be twice the size of the one that took her.
"Hello?" she calls to the futuristic-looking vessel, strapping her gun back to herself even if she finds it suspect the aliens didn't take it away. This doesn't look like any Gou'ald ship she's ever seen, the technology is all wrong and-
"Hello, Major Carter," comes the polite, if disembodied voice and Sam jumps, then immediately feels stupid when she realizes it's an AI. "I must apologize for taking you away from your mission, but your capture by the same abductors who took Captain Lance was never supposed to happen."
She blinks at that explanation, opening her mouth to retort though she's realizing now she might be breaking all manner of protocols if she says anything. Sam makes her way around the bridge, pointing her M-16 at whatever or whoever is unlucky enough to decide to come through the door next.
"Ms. Tarazi approaches. Might I suggest you lower your weapon, considering it was her hacking skill that made your rescue possible?"
Sam jumps again even with the advanced warning, but she drops the weapon back down by her side, allowing it to hang freely from its strap as she narrows her eyes to take in the woman before her. They take some liberties in the Stargate program, sure, but no computer hacker of theirs looks like this.
"Of course," she realizes, excitedly rambling before she remembers her manners or to actually introduce herself. "Once you identified the signal the aliens used to emit the tractor beam, you were able to redirect it to this vessel. Clever. And quick." She smiles in approval for the other woman while trying to take in the advanced device she's carrying.

Being the only sober one in the group leaves Zari feeling the most guilty. She notices first, of course. The flash of light is impossible to miss without being pretty messed up. It had been too late to do anything about it. By the time the others will well enough to help her so much time was lost. Ava is a wreck. Frankly she doesn't think Behrad, Nate, Mick, and John are doing much better. She doesn't know Sara much so it leaves her to make up the difference.
Zari finds herself leaning in to every skill Warrior Zari has. She runs algorithms with Gideon, studies what little data the AI had been able to collect once Zari reported to her what was happening, and works the problem the way Zari 1.0 would without all the emotional baggage. She knows she is losing a bit of herself in the process, but this isn't forever. She can't stand Ava's heartbreak a second longer than she has to. That isn't to say she has nothing else to offer. She is in regular contact with Team Supergirl since aliens are their deal. She is now in contact with a woman who claims to have been taken by the same ship. They are able to help fill in some needed gaps. It isn't until Samantha Carter enters the picture she makes real progress.
Now she has a lock on their signal, plenty of images of the ship, and data on their tractor beam. She hit the nerd goldmine with this near abduction. In theory, she can use the energy signature from the beam for sure to track this ship. She's positive that John can even use what she got to work this from a magic angle too. Zari is already sending off texts to Ray to get in on the group chat to see what he makes of her findings while she greets the woman she rescued. She's beyond chipper at the thought of finally nailing these guys and giving the team a much needed win.
"Thank you. Sorry about the whole almost getting kidnapped thing, but! Good news! Your almost abduction is going to help us find our missing friend." She holds out her free hand for the woman. "Zari Tarazi. Nice to meet you, Major."
The Tok'ra women all wear... interesting outfits, so she supposes this isn't too far off in the end. Even if she's still very confused about how this ship came to be orbiting Cimmeria. It has to be at least as technologically advanced as the Asgard, but this woman seems human. Well, at least, as far as she can tell. She knows better than to make such assumptions at this point, all she really knows is that Zari doesn't have a snake anywhere on her person and that helps her likeability even if she weren't clearly also a computer genius.
"Oh, uh. Don't worry about it." Sam licks her lips anxiously and squeezes the other woman's hand as she pushes the gun farther out of the way. Not that she thinks her primitive weapon will threaten an advanced race such as Zari's. "I'm just happy not being abducted... for a change."
Unless she is being abducted, just by Zari... She said she only did it for data, so does that mean she doesn't care if Sam survives? That's kind of worth knowing, isn't it? Instead of asking outright, she points to the tablet, making a reasonable assumption that a prisoner wouldn't be allowed to be in the "know," as it were.
"Are those the readings you acquired from the tractor beam? I'd love to help you analyze them."
She does breathe a little easier once that gun gets pushed further away. Zari isn't worried about herself. Behrad doesn't need the anxiety. The offer sparks a huge smile even if Zari can read between the lines. She's testing the waters here. That's more than fair. Zari just needs to clear some things up quickly then. "And I'd love your input. Gidget really talked you up. You have a stellar reputation and I could really use your brain, but...." She holds up a finger in front of her face.
"First, we need to be clear about what's happening here. This is a rescue. We are more than happy to drop you back off with your team this second and I cannot stress enough it has to be now since we have work to do here. I already have our co-captain talking to your people so they're not freaking out about what happened to you. If you want to stay and help? We totally need it. They kidnapped our captain first and we are pretty desperate to get her back. Totally up to you though. We are all about consent here." God knows they don't need a repeat of her first day with the Legends.
"Gidget? Oh, is that the voice I heard? I assume she's the artificial intelligence piloting your ship?"
Sam's smile is equally bright, though it slowly starts to slide as Zari clarifies things. She's not like any other alien SG-1 has ever come across, but of course, she's always happy to help. The nerd shit is alluring too.
"With how advanced this place is, I'm not sure how much help I'll be, but sometimes it helps just to have a sounding board, right? For some reason, the United States Air Force... of Earth. That's where I'm from, they, uh. They're very interested in locating your Sara Lance as well. And I must say, it's- refreshing, to see so many females in leadership roles. But I'm sure that's common for your people."
Don't be bitter, Samantha. She bites into her lips to keep from going on about #militarylife in the 1990s for a woman such as herself.
Zari nods at the first question, clarifying quickly. "Her full name is Gideon. Gidget is just a cute nickname I gave her." She shakes her head at the rest, waving a hand like the very thought of her not being useful is crazy. "Oh we're all actually from Earth too... on the ship at least. We have plenty of alien refuges on the actual planet. I'm actually in touch with a few of them in the group chat." Zari turns on her heel, motioning for Sam to follow her to Behrad's lab where they keep most of the tech and therefore the information Sam will need to go through. "Oh, I should probably explain. This is actually a time ship that's now doubling space ship. My baby bro, another genius like his big sister, made some mods so we can go out into space." Just in case she was worried they were too dumb to do that! The boys were minus Behrad given his status as the ship mechanic. "We're all from different points in the timeline. I'm from the future obviously! And while we are exclusively run by ladies given our superior leadership skills, I am very proud of the men we work with. I am sure you'll appreciate their talents too."

About the only time he gets bossy with her it's about magic, but that comes from a place of safety even if he often sounds smarmy about it more out of habit than anything else. When she touches the cards, they're warm to almost hot from the energy John suffused into them, and whether Zari is trying to or not her energy will do the same. When the two forces meet she might feel a static charge like when you walk across carpet and touch an unsuspecting victim.

And she quickly loses it at the card reveal. Zari snorts at it and his reaction. She shouldn't laugh at his suffering and yet. :') "I don't have a clue what that means, but I think someone is trolling you."

As he approaches Zari's room, he realizes he doesn't really have much of a reason to stick around. So he does what he does best and goes into obnoxiously helpful mode.
"So uhm... is there anything else I can get for you? You must be tired, I always feel like I need a vacay after the first vacay to recover from vacaying so hard... you feel me?"
no subject
She can see a ploy to stay when it happens. Zari has done it enough times, after all. This is going well so she doesn't want to cut Nate off even if this is a solo job. "I feel you. Want to grab me some cucumber water while I sort? I can't rest until it's all organized." She really can't. Zari doesn't have it in her to live in mess. She's not John!!

The praise from Carter certainly helps. Zari makes an unusual hacker in an animal print top, black lace skirt, black blazer, gold jewelry, and high heels. She doesn't act like one either since the first thing she does is frame her face with one hand while the other holds a very nice tablet from the 2040s.
"Thank you. Sorry about the whole almost getting kidnapped thing, but! Good news! Your almost abduction is going to help us find our missing friend." She holds out her free hand for the woman. "Zari Tarazi. Nice to meet you, Major."
no subject
I'd love to help you analyze them."
no subject
"First, we need to be clear about what's happening here. This is a rescue. We are more than happy to drop you back off with your team this second and I cannot stress enough it has to be now since we have work to do here. I already have our co-captain talking to your people so they're not freaking out about what happened to you. If you want to stay and help? We totally need it. They kidnapped our captain first and we are pretty desperate to get her back. Totally up to you though. We are all about consent here." God knows they don't need a repeat of her first day with the Legends.
